College Success

In College Success, our work with students as they venture off to their new college life is as much about helping them succeed in college, as it is about helping them develop the skills and awareness needed to successfully transition to any new stage of life.

We use a structured approach to learning, grounded in appreciative inquiry and positive psychology. Our framework for learning invites students to be curious, intentional, and reflective in their individual growth.

Discover: Students identify their strengths, skills, and abilities, as well as the areas for personal growth and development.

Dream: Students articulate their hopes and dreams for the future.

Design: Students create a plan of action for making their dreams a reality.

Deliver: Students take action to implement their plan.

Don’t Settle: Students will periodically reflect on what they’ve learned and accomplished. They’ll describe their feelings, generate ideas, and raise questions. In so doing, they’ll demonstrate connections they can make between their growth, accomplishments, and overall personal awareness. Reflection in many ways is a new stage of discovery, leading to new dreams, designs, and actions.

We offer two programs: College Jumpstart and College Persist

Benefits to Students

By using this framework, we empower students to:

  • Increase self-awareness
  • Learn about learning
  • Build habits and behaviors grounded in their strengths and assets
  • Explore and embrace new and unfamiliar challenges
  • Persevere in the face of ambiguity or adversity
  • Develop the ability to communicate with others
  • Experience, recognize, and celebrate personal development

What the Programs Include

College Jumpstart

College Jumpstart is for incoming first-year students and takes students through the first three stages, so they are ready to start their college career off strong. Students will spend time reflecting on the strengths and abilities they have, while also exploring important aspects of their college. They will also articulate their hopes and dreams for their future, creating an action plan they can enact, which will help guide their college experience.

College Persist

College Persist is an ongoing program that continues to provide support and instruction to students throughout their college experience. Drawing on their experiences in and out of the classroom, students will reflect on what is going well and what they’ve accomplished. They’ll revisit their plan of action, taking into account new interests, opportunities, and challenges. They will receive support on topics such as time management, study skills, goal setting, major and course exploration, and career exploration. Students can enroll at any time, though preferably at the start of a semester.
